Welmon Smith, Jr.
"I
tried to keep this BIO as short as possible but I'm from
Texas, and when we tell a story it goes on & on".
I was born in 1932 in Port Arthur, Texas and attended
Nederland High School. I went into the Air Force in 1950
and was stationed in Spokane, Washington as well as
Portland Oregon Air Base until my discharge
I fell in LOVE with a young lady (Nona) and we married
in December 1952. After 52 wonderful years we have three
wonderful children (two adopted) and after 15 years of
marriage we had a little girl. Now with the three kids
we have five grand children and two great-grand
children.
I do not have a college degree, but I did teach some
heating-air condition courses at Clark College.
Hobby? When I was growing up on a farm in Texas I
enjoyed watching things grow so to this day I love to
watch nature work. I think we have one of the most
beautiful places in the area. We enjoy having 40-50 over
to feast on one of our barbecues.
When the weather does not permit outdoor activity I try
to do some wood working in the basement ( I am not an
expert as YET)!
My wife & I owned a small business and were proud to
have a Lennox Dealership in the Heating and Air
Conditioning field. In 1994 we sold the business to a
local firm & retired. Now I am involved in church
activities with the Columbia Presbyterian Church, and we
are very involved in the local neighborhood association.
I have served as Venerable Master of Vancouver Valley
Scottish Rite & have served many offices in the Valley.
The one I have very high regards for is Director of The
Scholarship Foundation of Washington.
I served as V.P. for the Childhood Learning Disorders
for 3 Years.
I am Past Master of Mt. Hood Lodge #32. I served as
Master in the year of 1990.
I think I have been given every award from the Hiram
Award presented from the Lodge and The Grand Masters
Achievement Award from the Grand Master (which I am
proud to wear).
I served as President of The Temple Board as a
representative of Mt. Hood Lodge in 1996 and for several
years as Chairman of the Temple Board Committee.
I also belong to Al Kader Shrine in Portland, Oregon &
have bowled for the Shrine Hospital in the past.
I worked with youth groups (Rainbow & DeMolay) from the
1970’s to 1996.
I served as Rainbow Dad for several years too.
I have served as District 3 Membership Chairman for The
Rainbow Grand Executive Board.
I received several awards including Grand Cross of
Colors. To some of the old timers I am known as the
Candy Man of Rainbow. To this day, when I see them in
church they always look for that "candy pocket".
With DeMolay, I served as Scribe Advisor for several
years, and received the Honorary Legion of Honor Award
along with many other awards. |

Robert T. Wilson
I'm
a Seattle native growing up in Ballard, and graduating
from Ballard High in 1955. Yes, I did recently celebrate
my 50 year reunion. I had joined the Air National Guard
while in school and joined the regular USAF in 1959,
completing my required 8 years. I was a long distance
radio operator.
After returning home from West Germany, and yes it was
called that at that time, I realized I needed a college
education! I attended the UW with hopes of a BA in
business. Over the next several years I had gotten
married and started a family. I completed almost 2 years
of college, and it did help me in my working career to
at least get that far. I paid my own way so I know how
that works. Interesting how I could open the gas cap in
my '62 VW Beattle and check my available gas to be sure
I could get home from the Standard Station, where I
worked for $2.10 per hour, part time.
Over the next few years or so, I worked on the Standard
Gas station in the U District, now a Chevron, among
others before moving to the main office downtown
Seattle. I then sold real estate in Bellevue. I stayed
in the real estate field, first with the Milwaukee Road
Real Estate Dept, title insurance, mortgage and escrow.
I was mostly in sales and service or what they call,
indirect sales.
I have been a Mason since 1988 being a Past Master of
the Kirkland Masonic Lodge and a 33rd degree Scottish
Rite Mason. I'm a Shriner and enjoy driving the Calliope
Unit in parades and at picnics.
I have been the Assistant Director with the Scholarship
Foundation, representing the Seattle Vally since 2001,
and I do enjoy meeting the students and helping them
with the application process. |

I
was born the fifth child in a family of seven, four boys
and three girls. I was raised in Bridgeport, Washington
on an apple and cherry orchard. My summers and most
weekends were spent helping my father do what ever was
necessary to maintain our farm.
I enjoyed all sports but basket ball was the only one
that did not conflict with the orchard work. I played
center all four years of high school. I graduated in
1952.
I graduated from Central Washington College, now Central
Washington University, in 1962 with a BA in education
and taught four years in the public school system, the
first two years in the North Shore school district in
Bothell and last two years in Coulee Dam high school. I
started teaching at Columbia Basin College in 1967 and
finished a MA degree in technical education in 1974 and
retired after teaching thirty years at Columbia Basin
College, Pasco.
I married my wife, Betty Jo, in 1958 and we have two
daughters and six grand children who live in Anchorage
Alaska. We are true “snow birds” we go north in the
winter spending Thanksgiving through the first of the
year with our children.
My hobbies include raising registered quarter horses,
wood working, gardening and taking care of my small
farm. My wife and I are very active in St. Paul
Episcopal Church and we both sing in the choir.
I am a past venerable master of the Kennewick Scottish
Rite Lodge and am a life member. I am a life member of
Kennewick Masonic Lodge and past master of the Prosser
Masonic Lodge. I have served as the Worthy Patron of
Beulah Chapter of Eastern Star on three different
occasions and I am a life member. I am a member of, The
Royal Order of Scotland, the Scottish Rite Research
Society and El Katif Shrine. Working in all of these
Masonic organizations have been rewarding but the one
that has given me the most pleasure is serving the
Valley of Kennewick as Director of the Scottish Rite
Scholarship Foundation of Washington for over twenty
years. Contact me for a scholarship application if you
are from the Kennewick area or attending college in the
area. |

Jim Larson
Treasurer,
Scottish Rite Scholarship Foundation of Washington.
I was born in 1936 in Bremerton & grew up in a logging
family, mainly in the Bellingham and Skagit County
areas. I graduated from Sedro-Woolley High School. My
early jobs were as logger, farm worker, mechanic, and
commercial fisherman. I was in the U.S. Army from 1955
to 1957 (stateside).
I received a BS degree in 1960 & my earlier career was
as a public health inspector with Snohomish County (6
years+). I enjoyed it but decided to return to the U.W.
After a year full-time I completed an accounting major,
went to work for what was then the largest auditing firm
in the world, Peat Marwick Mitchell, & became a C.P.A.
in 1970. I worked 2 years for Peat, & 3 years for a
local firm in Seattle.
In 1974 I was hired by a client of my CPA firm, the
Slope Indicator Company, a Seattle manufacturer of
geotechnical instruments, as Controller. It was a
challenge but very rewarding, & I stayed with Slope for
almost 25 years, till I retired as Treasurer in early
1999. Over the years I computerized their accounting
systems & traveled worldwide to set up & visit several
small overseas sales offices. In the late 1990’s I was
one of those instrumental in moving the company up to
Snohomish County in the Bothell area (it is now in
Mukilteo).
I have had a long & happy marriage to my lovely wife
Sonja, & we have a daughter, Kathy, & a son, Carl. My
daughter recently (2005) gave birth to our grandson,
Joulian. My son is a decorated veteran of the Iraq war,
now back in college.
My hobbies are reading, old movies, singing (with Shrine
Chanters, & was in several operettas a few years back in
Kirkland). My Masonic affiliations are numerous, but
basically I am a Freemason since 1963 & member of Robert
Burns Lodge #243 (Past Master, 1968), Everett Valley
Scottish Rite (33°, 1993), York Rite bodies, etc., as
well as the Scottish Rite Scholarship Foundation. |

Mark
Quenneville
I
grew up in Toronto, Canada and as a young engineer,
immigrated to the US to work at Boeing Space & Defense
Group. Shortly thereafter, I established an engineering
consulting practice MESG LLC to address my passion for
technology and my entrepreneurial projects.
Back in the Gulf oil boom, I worked as a commercial
diver to fund my multi-discipline engineering education
and did my engineering apprenticeship with Messerschmitt
on German helicopter avionics. Inspired by the
mechatronics of early robotic manipulator arms, my
engineering career focused on real-time embedded control
systems. For the next 11 years, I designed flight
control systems, embedded engine computers, integrated
navigation systems and passenger entertainment systems.
As a Microsoft Program Manager, I took a leadership role
in a joint venture between Microsoft and NBC to pioneer
the convergence of television and internet. My team
received many technical accolades and patents for
MSNBC’s back-end information systems while we blazed the
technical trail for web publication systems and helped
industry finalize practical XML standards for content
syndication. At Vulcan Inc, I championed complex
technology initiatives, reviewed venture capital
proposals that mapped to the Wired World and created
Vulcan’s first Software Engineering Department and
later, the Technology Research Group.
My affinity for leveraging interns, co-op students and
new grads has led to many fulfilling accomplishments,
powerful professional alliances and rich friendships.
Such individuals are the agents of change, they are the
imaginative geniuses and the technological workhorses.
These people are the heart of our future. I am proud and
honored to know them.
It gives me great satisfaction to give rise to a vision
and build a team to translate it into applications and
machines that change the world in a positive way. This
is accomplished by working with like-minded individuals
through the use of creativity and imagination based
around sound knowledge of the laws of the universe and a
deep seated culture of intentional good-will. This sort
of fundamental change will cause global transformations
culturally, economically, and politically. The
advancement – no, the survival of humankind depends on
the occurrence of such critical paradigm-changing
events.
I live in Bellingham, Washington with my lovely wife
Jackie and two beautiful children. Outside of work, I
play on the Bellingham Avalanche hockey team and I am a
member of the Bellingham School District Technology Task
Force, charting the course for practical use of
technology in education. I am privileged and honored to
be a Master Mason and a 32° Scottish Rite Mason in the
Valley of Bellingham. |
