Are the awards based on financial need? |
No - points are given, however, for working to help pay expenses.

2.
Are there any other restrictions?
|
Check the eligibility requirements under Scholarships and Fellowships. Please Note: Distance Learning and/or on-line classes will not be considered when determining your full time status.

3.
Do I have to have a personal or family connection to a Masonic body?
|
No - Minimal points are given for such a connection, however, the primary consideration is grade point (minimum 3.0) and participation in school, church, community and/or other activities. Most of the award winners do not have any connection to a Masonic body.

4.
What are some of the criteria used for scoring?
|
One of the most important criteria is the Goal Statement. Students should be able to clearly express their education and career goals in 100 words, or less. Activities (church, school, community, other), Awards Received (church, school, other), Education Data such as grade point (minimum 3.0 GPA to qualify), foreign language and field experience are other areas used in scoring.

5.
Where can I get an application and/or more information?
|
From the Director in your area, (see Contact Us). Those students attending school away from their home area (such as students from Spokane attending the University of Washington), may contact the Director in the area of the school. Any Director will be happy to answer your questions and assist in any way they can.

6.
How much are the awards?
|
The top 2 undergraduate applicants (called the Barr & Rinderhagen Scholars) each receive $3,000.00. Then 10% of the top scorers (less the Barr & Rinderhagen Scholars) are given $2,500.00. $1,500.00 scholarships are awarded to the balance of the successful undergraduate applicants. Undergraduate renewals are $1,500.00. The GWU fellowship award is $10,000.00 (covers 2 years) which is matched by GWU for a total award of $20,000.00. Other fellowships as described on the Graduate Fellowship page are $5,000.00 for one year.

7.
When are applications due?
|
Normally by March 31st of the year applying for -- for example, those applying for the academic year 2007-08 will need to have all materials in to the Director in their area by March 31, 2008.

|

9.
What if I am an entering Freshman or Sophomore?
|
Many Masonic organizations offer scholarships for students in their local communities -- Contact the Scottish Rite Director in your area (Contact Us), and they may be able to help you. Also, check out the More Opportunities page and look at the information found there.

The applicant applying for the FIRST TIME
must be:
- A U.S. Citizen.
- A Washington State Resident.
- An entering Third year (Junior), Fourth year
(Senior) or (if required for degree) Fifth year
undergraduate (5th year requirement must be verified
by college/university).
- Attending an accredited 4 year college or
university in the State of Washington as a full time
student for the full academic year. Please Note:
Distance Learning and/or on-line classes will not be
considered when determining your full time status.
- Maintaining a college level GPA (or equivalent)
of at least 3.0.
