How to Play Poker

Poker

In Poker, the highest pair wins. The highest pair is when a player has two consecutive pairs, plus a high card. If both players have a high card, the high card breaks the tie. The same goes for ties involving two players who each have a pair. If both players are tied for the highest hand, the highest card wins the pot.

In most games, players place poker chips into the pot. There are at least two hundred chips in a game with seven or more players. The lowest chip is a white chip. Red and blue chips are worth five whites. Dark-colored chips are worth two, four, or five reds. Players purchase chips before the game begins by “buying in”. Normally, everyone in a game buys in for the same amount.

If more than one player remains in the game, a showdown will be held. During this step, players will reveal their concealed cards and evaluate their hands. The player with the best hand wins the pot. Poker hands consist of five cards. Each card represents a different combination. A straight flush, a three-card straight, a pair, or two-of-a-kind is considered a strong hand.

A player can make a “nuts” hand when they have a pair of sevens. This is also known as a “backdoor flush” in the game. This is achieved by hitting the required cards on the turn and river.
