A player places an initial amount of money into the pot (the amount varies by game) and is then dealt cards. After a number of betting rounds, the highest hand wins the pot.
Players can make bets in the form of an ante, blind, or bring-in depending on the rules of the game. Antes and blinds are forced bets, while bring-ins are a voluntary wager that can be placed by any player.
The highest ranking hand is a pair of distinct cards, followed by three of a kind and then two pair. If two hands tie on the pairs, they are decided by rank in order of the higher card, then by the high card rule described above.
When betting comes around to you, you can say “call” to raise the same amount as the last player, or you can fold your hand. Then, the person to your right can choose to raise again, or call, or just fold. This way, the betting continues until everyone calls or folds. Players are not required to play their cards, but must make decisions based on the risks and expected value of each action.
