Depending on the rules, one or more players must place an initial amount of money into the pot before they are dealt cards. This is called a forced bet and can come in the form of an ante, blind bet, or bring-in. In addition, a player may raise the bet before someone else, a process called raising.
Once all bets are placed, a deal of cards is made. The cards may be dealt face up or face down, depending on the variant of poker being played. During this phase, players take turns revealing their hands. The player with the highest hand wins the pot.
When a player puts a bet into the pot, the player to his left must either call that bet by placing chips into the pot equal to or greater than the total number of chips placed into the pot by any preceding player or drop out. A player who drops out is out of the betting for that round and does not receive any additional cards until the next deal. If a player does not wish to put any chips into the pot, they may choose to check.
